The Seville City Council has decided to open the bus lane on Parlamento and Resolana streets to general traffic. The measure aims to reduce the traffic congestion caused by the Metro construction works. Drivers will be able to use this lane, previously exclusive to buses, in the hope that traffic flow will improve in an area plagued by constant closures and detours.
The bus lane as a technical patch for an infrastructure problem 🚧
From a mobility standpoint, the decision is a temporary adjustment on a saturated road network. The bus lane, designed to prioritize public transport, is reassigned to private vehicles to absorb traffic diverted by the works. However, this solution does not address the road's capacity deficit nor the lack of efficient alternatives, merely redistributing the same volume of vehicles in a space that does not grow.
The bus lane surrenders: now everyone suffers together in the same traffic jam 🚗
The measure is almost poetic: taking the lane away from buses so that cars can advance three meters before hitting the next traffic light. Drivers will celebrate being able to use that empty lane for five minutes, just until it fills up and turns into another parking lot on wheels. Of course, pedestrians will still wonder why no one talks about adding more trains while everyone stares fixedly at the asphalt.
