BeXide and Bandai Namco have announced Namco Legendary Mountains, a three-dimensional puzzle game that transforms classic 80s arcade games into voxel-based challenges. It arrives this summer on Switch 2, Switch, and PC (Steam). Attendees at BitSummit PUNCH in Kyoto (May 22-24) will be able to try a demo. The mechanics are straightforward: you launch voxel capsules onto the field, and if two identical ones collide, they merge into a larger piece.
Voxels and Pixel Art: The Technical Fusion Behind the Puzzles 🎮
The graphics engine works with voxel models to represent iconic Namco characters, combining classic pixel art with a 3D structure. Each capsule contains a set of cubes that, upon colliding with another of the same type, regroup into a larger shape. The physics system determines how the pieces fall and stack, while the camera allows perspective rotation. The development aims for stable fluidity across all three platforms, without superfluous visual effects.
Capsules That Hate Each Other Less Than Humans on the Subway 😅
The premise is as simple as it is dangerous: two identical ones touch and merge, forming a larger voxel. It sounds like group therapy for lonely cubes. But be careful, because if you let them accumulate uncontrollably, the field fills up and you lose. So don't let the 80s characters pile up like socks in a washing machine. At least here, when they collide, they don't fight: they become one.
