James Gunn has left his mark on both Marvel and the new DC. Of all his work, Guardians of the Galaxy stands as his most well-rounded film, blending humor, action, and heart. In contrast, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is seen as his most uneven installment, though it retains powerful moments like Yondu's death and a solid villain played by Kurt Russell.
Narrative pulse and CGI use in the saga 🎬
Gunn demonstrated remarkable control over pacing and character development in the first installment, where CGI was integrated without overwhelming the plot. For Vol. 2, the excess of visual effects and the episodic structure hindered the narrative flow. However, the animation of Ego and Kurt Russell's living planet is technically flawless. The soundtrack, featuring classic songs, remains a success in both films, though in the sequel it loses some freshness by repeating the formula.
Yondu, the villain who stole the show (and the arrows) 🏹
Kurt Russell does a decent job as Ego, a planet with a literal ego. But let's be honest: the truly memorable villain of Vol. 2 is Yondu, who isn't even the bad guy. Michael Rooker steals the film with his whistling arrow and his final redemption. While Ego tries to be a cosmic god, Yondu earns the audience's tears with a death that even the Collector of Knowhere couldn't anticipate. Ironies of space.
