Data East revives its classic 1987 RPG, Toujinmakyouden Hercules no Eikou, for modern consoles. On May 21, players on PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 will be able to embody the hero Hercules on his mission to defeat the Demon King Hades and rescue the goddess Venus from the underworld. Priced at $7.99 or 800 yen, this title is part of the Console Archives series, which adapts 8-bit classics to current platforms. However, while the interface and manual are in English, the game's content is only available in Japanese.
Console Archives: how a disguised emulator reaches your modern console 🎮
The Console Archives series emulates the original 8-bit hardware on PS5 and Switch 2, offering features like quick save, rewind, and screen filters. In the case of Toujinmakyouden, the game runs under an emulation layer that replicates the original ROM without modifications. This means players will encounter the technical limitations of 1987: pixelated sprites, chip music, and an interface that doesn't scale well on 4K screens. The lack of an English translation for the in-game dialogue is a detail Data East has not corrected, leaving non-Japanese players with a manual in English and a game in Japanese.
Hercules speaks Japanese: the underworld has no subtitles 🇯🇵
If you thought your mission to rescue Venus would be simple, think again. Hercules must not only face Hades but also the language barrier. The English manual explains how to move, but the game's dialogues are in old Japanese. So, unless you've studied kanji during lockdown, your strategy will be to press random buttons and hope not to fall into a trap. That said, at least the $7.99 price tag is cheaper than a Japanese course.
