Capcom has announced the return of Frank West with Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, a revamped version of the 2006 classic. The title uses the RE Engine, the same one from Resident Evil, to offer photorealistic lighting and 4K textures. Additionally, it allows rendering hundreds of zombies simultaneously on screen without sacrificing performance, a technical feat that promises visual chaos without stuttering.
RE Engine, Maya, and Substance Suite: the technical trident of the remaster 🛠️
Development relies on the RE Engine to manage dynamic lighting and real-time reflections, while Maya is used to model and animate enemies with greater detail. Substance Suite applies procedural textures that simulate wear and dirt on clothing and the environment. The result is a more realistic shopping mall, with soft shadows and a density of zombies that was previously impossible in the previous generation.
Now the zombies look so good you almost feel bad killing them 😅
Of course, now that every zombie has 4K textures and almost cinematic lighting, there's a side effect: when Frank smashes their head with a baseball bat, you feel like you're destroying a digital work of art. Before, they were gray, expressionless blobs; now they are hyper-realistic creatures with pores and wrinkles. At least, if they bite you, they'll do it with perfectly rendered teeth.
