The International Space Station's days are numbered, with a planned deorbit by NASA after 2031. Meanwhile, China is accelerating the expansion of its Tiangong station, which will grow from its current three modules to six, doubling its mass to 180 tons. The orbital race is changing hands.
Expansion in phases: from the T to the cross and beyond 🚀
The current Tiangong, T-shaped and operational since 2022, will receive a multifunctional module docked to the Tianhe core module. This will create a cross-shaped structure and prepare the foundation for three additional modules. The final mass, 180 tons, is far from the ISS's 400, but enough to stably house six astronauts. China prioritizes a measured, unhurried expansion.
The ISS retires and Tiangong gets its act together 😅
While NASA plans an orbital retirement with an ocean plunge, China decides its station needs more square footage. It seems the only space station in low Earth orbit by 2031 will be China's, though its size still isn't enough for a gym. Perhaps Chinese astronauts will have to share a bunk bed, but at least they won't have to pay rent.
