The Canadian Grand Prix will be the turning point for Formula 1 engines. After the race, the FIA will analyze data from the ADUO system to decide which manufacturers can improve their power units. Only those with a deficit greater than 2% compared to the reference engine will receive the green light. Honda and Aston Martin are in the spotlight, with an estimated loss of up to 100 HP compared to Mercedes.
The FIA opens the floodgates for improvements based on ADUO 🏎️
The ADUO system is not a whim, but a control mechanism to prevent power differences from unbalancing the grid. The FIA will collect data from all cars during the Canadian weekend. If a manufacturer shows a disadvantage greater than 2% in pure performance, it will be able to introduce updates to its engine. Honda, which supplies Aston Martin, is the clearest candidate to receive this benefit. Its power unit has shown notable shortcomings on straights and in energy management, two areas where Mercedes dominates.
Honda needs a new engine or a miracle 🔧
Honda's situation is so delicate that some engineers have already started doing the math: a 100 HP deficit is not recovered with good intentions or a couple of nuts. At the Sakura factory, they must be burning incense and reviewing manuals from the 80s to find solutions. Meanwhile, at Aston Martin, Lawrence Stroll has already asked for a budget to buy candles and pray to Saint Fernando Alonso. If the FIA gives them permission, they better not leave it until the last minute.
