Disney World has renovated the Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin attraction at Magic Kingdom. The interactive system now operates in real time with Unreal Engine. The new blasters allow free movement, haptic vibration, and audio effects when hitting targets. The targets light up, change color, and modify their point value during the ride, encouraging visitors to explore the environment.
Unreal Engine drives real-time interaction 🚀
The technical renovation is based on Unreal Engine to manage the interactive system. The blasters now move without physical restrictions, sending targeting data to the graphics engine. Haptic vibration responds to impact, while audio syncs with the color and score changes of the targets. Disney has implemented a sensor network that dynamically adjusts the value of each target, forcing players to adapt their strategy on every round.
Now even the bad guys light up with points 💡
The new mechanic turns Zurg into a target with a variable price. Visitors who used to shoot without looking now have to calculate whether the red target is worth more than the blue one. Disney has managed to get kids to stop crying over not reaching the maximum and start arguing about point inflation in space. At least the blaster's vibration distracts from the fact that you're still losing to a seven-year-old.
