The Forceight study has presented a demo of Fresco, an upcoming action-adventure and puzzle game from Kelonia Games. The proposal centers on an archaeologist who explores a 3D temple and, at the same time, is a character within the 2D Egyptian frescoes on its walls. The player alternates between both perspectives to solve the mysteries of ancient Egypt.
The decal projection technique that brings the paintings to life 🎨
The visual effect that allows characters to move within the frescoes is achieved through decal projections in Unreal Engine 5. This technique is not just a graphical resource, but the basis of the gameplay. The puzzles require observing and manipulating the environments both in the three-dimensional dimension of the temple and in the two-dimensional plane of the mural paintings, creating a dual exploration dynamic.
When the dimensional jump is literally against the wall 😅
The game poses a situation that every virtual architect has suffered: getting stuck in a texture. Except here it's a feature. Imagine having a clipping bug, but instead of being an error, it's the entire premise of your adventure. It's as if, after years of fighting to get out of a map, someone decided to listen to the wall and build their house there. A lesson that sometimes the problem is the solution.
