Catalonia has installed eight control points on the AP-7 to monitor trucks and buses, at a cost of 4.4 million euros. The system weighs vehicles at 200 km/h, reads license plates to verify insurance and MOT, and checks tachographs to control rest periods. If it detects infractions, it alerts the Mossos and roadside panels. For citizens, this means greater safety on the highway and fewer risks from overloaded or poorly maintained trucks.
Control technology without stopping traffic 🚛
The system, a pioneer in Spain, uses dynamic weighing sensors integrated into the asphalt that can measure the total weight of the vehicle even at high speeds. License plate reading cameras cross-reference the data with DGT and insurance company databases in real time. If the digital tachograph shows that the driver has exceeded the permitted driving hours, the system detects it instantly. All information is sent to the Mossos d’Esquadra, who can intercept the vehicle at the next service area or exit.
Goodbye to the I forgot my MOT excuse 😅
From now on, truck and bus drivers will have to stop using the classic excuse that they didn't know their insurance had expired or their MOT was overdue. The system reads the license plate, checks the database, and in less time than it takes to say I got caught by the radar, the infraction is ready. Next up, the highway's LED panels will start displaying personalized messages like: Driver of the red truck, your tachograph says you've been driving for 14 hours. Pull over at the next area or call your boss to ask for a raise.
