A fault in a cable near the Collblanc substation in L'Hospitalet caused a power outage that affected more than 11,000 subscribers in Barcelona, L'Hospitalet, Esplugues, and Cornellà. The incident began on Monday at 10:00 PM, leaving homes and basic services without power for several hours. Endesa deployed repair teams overnight, gradually restoring service until it was fully normalized at 4:55 AM.
The fragility of the urban power grid in the face of isolated failures ⚡
The outage highlighted the dependence of the electrical infrastructure on a single critical point. The Collblanc substation channels a large portion of the supply for the southern metropolitan area, and the breakage of a medium-voltage cable triggered a domino effect. Endesa technicians isolated the damaged section and rerouted the load through alternative paths, a process requiring coordination with the control center to avoid overloads. The physical repair of the cable, in a trench and with specialized splices, was completed in less than seven hours.
The cable that reminded us that without power there is no Netflix 🕯️
Eleven thousand subscribers rediscovered on Monday the pleasure of reading by candlelight, or rather, cursing the black screen of a dead phone battery. While Endesa sweated in the trench, many neighbors improvised cold dinners and found out that the guy on the fourth floor does have a generator, but he's not planning to share it. By five in the morning, the power returned, and with it the hum of the router. Technology is a marvel, until a cable decides to take a break.
