Digital Domain reveals the process behind the Skeleton Man, the new incarnation of terror in the series *It: Welcome to Derry*. Starting from actor Peter Schoelier's performance, the team, led by animation supervisor Ellen Hoffmann, conceived the monster as a projection of childhood fears. Its design evolved from Nikos Kalaitzidis's initial sketches to Mitchell Drain's final model.
Gen Man 2.0: the anatomical base of a monster 💀
The proprietary technology Gen Man 2.0 was key to building a realistic skeletal and muscular base. On top of this, Schoelier's face was digitally redesigned and a skin simulation was applied with attention to detail. For the movement, the animators drew inspiration from contortionists and horror movie references, developing a spider-like and creepy body mechanics that defines the character.
A résumé to scare children 😱
The Skeleton Man's service record is extensive: mastery of contortion, advanced courses in spider-like movements, and a master's in facial redesign to keep you up at night. All of it backed by technology that simulates every last tendon. One can almost imagine its LinkedIn profile: Seeking opportunities to manifest in nightmares and dark spaces.
