Redfall: an open-world cooperative game with Unreal Engine 5
Arkane Austin develops Redfall, a cooperative adventure that immerses players in an open world infested with vampires. The project employs Unreal Engine 5 as its technical core, allowing the integration of advanced lighting and rendering systems to build a unique atmosphere. 🧛♂️
Key technical and aesthetic features
The UE5 engine enables features like Lumen for calculating global illumination and real-time reflections. This manages a full day-night cycle that constantly modifies the game's ambiance. The art direction opts for a distinctive visual style, recreating a New England town with a very personal color palette and environmental design.
Visual and gameplay elements:- Processes complex effects for heroes' powers and enemy abilities.
- Level design and architecture encourage vertical combat and team exploration.
- Aims to create a sense of visual cohesion through dynamic lighting and materials.
Sometimes, a powerful engine illuminates both the hits and the bugs lurking in the shadows.
Software used in production
Arkane Austin's team employed a professional workflow with standard industry applications. These tools were essential for modeling, sculpting, texturing, and simulating all the elements that make up the Redfall universe.
Development workflow with 3D tools:- Modeled characters and environments using Maya or Blender, along with ZBrush for sculpting details.
- Applied Houdini to generate visual effects and complex physical simulations.
- Created and adjusted textures and materials using the Substance 3D Suite.
Integration and final perspective
All assets and systems were assembled and packaged within Unreal Engine 5 to shape the final gameplay experience. Despite facing some technical issues at launch, the project demonstrates how to leverage UE5's capabilities in an extensive open-world environment. The result is a title that seeks to stand out for its cohesive atmosphere and cooperative gameplay designed for verticality. 🎮
