Naoki Yoshida, director of Final Fantasy 14, acknowledged at the 2026 Fan Festival that he has considered developing a single-player spin-off set in the world of Eorzea. The idea arises to silence purists who claim that an online Final Fantasy is not a real Final Fantasy. The project would explore other eras or characters, seeking to attract those who reject the multiplayer experience.
A polished engine for a solo adventure 🎮
Technically, Yoshida proposes reusing the MMO's foundation, but adapting it for a single-player experience. The current graphics engine, optimized after years of patches, would allow for a more linear narrative without dedicated servers. Combat would be readjusted to eliminate group dependency, with AI systems for companions. The real challenge is redesigning dungeons and raids, originally designed for eight players, into content for one. It wouldn't be a port, but a rebuild from scratch.
The syndrome of the MMO that isn't an MMO 😅
So, after years of convincing people that FF14 is a full-fledged Final Fantasy, now Yoshida says: okay, we'll give you a single-player version so you can stop whining. It's like a sushi chef making a pasta dish for customers who don't like raw fish. The paradox is that many of those purists will end up complaining that the online game was better. Because, of course, without other players, who do you blame for your deaths?
