The second season of Fallout has arrived with the quality seal of Industrial Light & Magic, which handled 325 visual effects shots. The work focused on two key areas: recreating the environment of New Vegas and bringing the fearsome Deathclaw creature to life. The team translated the video game's aesthetic into a realistic setting, emphasizing the scale of the Strip and its post-apocalyptic wear and tear.
Neon, dust, and rigging: the technique behind the Strip 🎮
For New Vegas, ILM combined computer-generated environments with digital matte paintings. The flickering neon signs and dilapidated buildings add narrative details. The lighting contrasts the intense sunlight with the unstable glow of power sources. For the Deathclaw, the challenge was modeling, rigging, and animation to make its weight and physicality feel threatening, including destruction effects and interaction with the ground.
The Deathclaw didn't come to make friends (or pay rent) 🦎
All very serious, but nobody told the Deathclaw this was a prestige series. The beast arrived, broke everything in its path, and on top of that demanded its lighting flatter its scales. ILM's technicians sweated to ensure it didn't look like a giant lizard with anger issues. In the end, New Vegas turned out so real that it's almost a shame you can't place bets there.
