Touken Ranbu ONLINE, the sword training simulator with over 14 million users, presents a new illustration where Yamabagiri Kunihiro dominates figure skating. The image captures his speed and presence as he glides across the ice, with sparks shining around him. The Tōken Danshi, warriors who are personified swords, protect history, and now they also challenge the ice rinks with style.
The computer animation behind the ice shine ⛸️
To achieve the ice spark effect, developers employed real-time particle simulation techniques. Each fragment dynamically reflects light, using vertex shaders to calculate refraction. Yamabagiri's movement was captured through keyframe interpolation in a 3D engine, adjusting the inertia of his cape and hair. The ice rink uses a normal map with variable roughness to simulate scratches and specular reflections. Everything runs at 60 fps on mobile devices with level-of-detail optimization.
When a historical sword skates better than you ⚔️
Yamabagiri Kunihiro, dating from the Edo period, now dedicates himself to performing pirouettes on synthetic ice. Meanwhile, many players barely manage to keep their balance on their own feet on a real rink. The illustration reminds us that if a 400-year-old sword can learn a triple axel, perhaps we should stop making excuses not to go to the gym. Or at least, practice in Touken Ranbu.
