The new Star Wars movie kicks off without pause. In its first 30 minutes, we see Din Djarin accept a mission from Colonel Ward, played by Sigourney Weaver. The mission: stop the Imperial remnants. The setting: a snowy planet where Mando faces off against troops, a droid, and a chase that culminates against AT-AT walkers and a race against bombs. Pure serial spectacle.
How the winter chaos was filmed: practical effects and long takes ❄️
The snow sequence combines real sets with digital backgrounds. The AT-ATs are scale models controlled by cables, while the explosions were achieved with controlled pyrotechnics. The enemy droid is an animatronic puppet operated by three technicians. The camera follows Din in long takes that avoid abrupt cuts, using harnesses and stabilizers. The sound of footsteps on the snow was recorded with contact microphones on fake ice.
Grogu waits in the ship and doesn't even ask for popcorn 🍿
While Mando freezes his butt off fighting walkers, Grogu stays warm in the Razor Crest. He doesn't help, he doesn't shoot, he just stares with those big eyes. Basically, it's the same plan we all use when it's time to move: play dumb and wait for the other person to finish. At least the little green guy didn't ask to stop to pee every twenty minutes, which is something.
