Transport for London has issued an urgent advisory for the bank holiday weekend. Temperatures will exceed 30 °C, with a peak of 34 °C expected on Monday, the hottest day of May. The UK Health Security Agency has activated the first heat alert of 2026, and TfL is asking passengers to look out for each other and stay hydrated while traveling.
Underground ventilation systems at their limit 🌡️
The London Underground network, decades old, faces its annual test. The deep tunnels lack air conditioning and rely on mechanical fans and water cooling systems. With the heat outside, temperatures in the carriages can exceed 40 °C. TfL recommends traveling with water bottles, although regulations still prohibit alcoholic beverages on transport.
The hottest day and the unventilated carriage 🥵
TfL asks passengers to look out for each other. Translation: don't faint on the platform or use the carriage as a sauna. If Monday reaches 34 °C, the Central Line tunnels will be the ideal place to boil an egg. Bring water, fans, and patience. Or stay home with the fan, which is cheaper and doesn't smell of other people's sweat.
