GKIDS has acquired North American distribution rights for Tekkonkinkreet, the 2006 cult film directed by Michael Arias. The film returns to US theaters on May 31 and June 1 with a 4K remaster, available in Japanese and English. Animated by Studio4°C and based on the manga by Taiyo Matsumoto, the story follows Black and White, two orphans who protect Treasure Town from the yakuza and real estate developers.
4K Remaster: the scrap yard neighborhood now looks sharper 🎬
The new 4K master was scanned from the original 35mm negative, with a restoration that respects the vibrant color palette and digital animation style of Studio4°C. The film, which combined 2D and 3D techniques to bring the chaotic Treasure Town to life, now offers a resolution that highlights the details of its hand-drawn backgrounds and urban textures. The subsequent release on 4K UHD Blu-ray and digital will allow appreciation of the layer composition work without the compression artifacts of previous editions.
Black and White return: now with fewer dead pixels 👊
At last, fans will be able to see Black's bruises and White's ramblings with a clarity that previously only existed in their animated nightmares. And if you survive watching those two kids dish out beatings to the yakuza without flinching, you can do it at home with the 4K UHD, where every brick of Treasure Town looks so real you can almost smell the rotten fish from the market. A perfect excuse to rediscover that animated child violence never ages, it just gets remastered.
