Production designer Aurélien Predal, a key figure in Across the Spider-Verse and Inside Out 2, offered an exclusive look at his work during Comicon Napoli 2026. In conversation with Screen Rant, Predal broke down his role in Project Hail Mary, where he joined the project late to handle the color and lighting of a key sequence, a challenge he accepted due to his admiration for the original novel and the directors.
Late color and lighting in a high-stakes sequence 🎨
Predal explained that his involvement in Project Hail Mary was specific but intense. Upon joining the project, the team had already completed much of the work, so his task was to harmonize the color and lighting of a central sequence without altering the established narrative flow. The artist highlighted that such late adjustments require a precise understanding of the film's visual language to avoid breaking aesthetic coherence, a technical challenge he resolved through close collaboration with the directors.
The art of arriving late without anyone complaining 🎬
Predal joked about his late entry into the project, comparing it to arriving at a dinner when dessert has already been served and having to cook a new dish without anyone noticing the change. Fortunately, his experience on franchises like Spider-Verse allowed him to adjust the lighting without the production team having to redo entire scenes. In the end, the greatest achievement was that fans didn't detect the visual patch, something celebrated more than an Oscar in the film world.
