Flying Rat Studio has presented Pit Panic, a 2D platformer roguelike that will arrive on PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC in July. The game proposes a fast-paced rhythm where a curious archaeologist must traverse handcrafted levels, defeat ancient bosses, and climb with urgency. Its core mechanic is a multifunctional grappling hook that allows digging blocks, swinging, and discovering hidden treasures, as well as transforming environmental elements to solve ambient puzzles.
Technical Development: Handcrafted Levels and Grappling Hook Physics 🎮
The studio has designed each level manually, prioritizing replayability through alternative routes and secrets that the grappling hook can reveal. The hook's physics allow precise interactions with destructible blocks and anchor points, while the ambient puzzle system forces the player to modify the environment to progress. The roguelike structure ensures that each run offers different combinations of obstacles and enemies, although progression is based on temporary upgrades that are lost upon death. Performance targets 60 stable fps on all platforms, with special attention to fast loading on Switch 2.
Archaeologist with a Grappling Hook: Indiana Jones' Wet Dream 😏
Finally, a game where an archaeologist doesn't spend all day dusting off bones in a museum, but instead uses their work tool to swing like Tarzan and smash walls with hook strikes. Of course, the urgency to climb suggests something worse than an angry mummy is coming from behind. It's probably the syndrome of yes, but at least we'll die in style, hanging from a block while trying to remember which button opens the inventory.
