Papercutz has announced Midnight Island, a new series of young adult graphic novels that combines mystery and adventure. The story follows a group of teenagers on a remote island where strange events keep piling up. The first volume will hit bookstores on July 28, promising plot twists and characters with secrets. The publisher aims to attract young readers with accessible suspenseful plots and a fast pace.
Creative process and building visual suspense 🎨
The creative team has structured the narrative using cliffhanger techniques at the end of each chapter. Preliminary sketches show the use of cool color palettes for night scenes and warm ones for flashbacks. The typography in speech bubbles changes thickness according to the tension of the moment. Papercutz has confirmed that each volume will be 112 pages long and that the backgrounds were drawn with references to real coastal landscapes to give credibility to the setting.
Spoiler: the adults don't solve anything (as usual) 😅
Of course, the protagonists' parents appear just enough to say don't go into the woods and then disappear. The kids, meanwhile, sneak into an abandoned mansion without a flashlight or phone charger. If we learn anything from these series, it's that teenage logic is conspicuously absent, but at least the mystery promises to keep us on edge. That said, someone should teach them to bring a first aid kit.
