Christopher Nolan has released the trailer for his new epic The Odyssey, based on Homer's classic. The film, which will hit theaters on July 17, narrates the long journey home of the Greek hero Odysseus from the Trojan War to Ithaca, where he must rescue his wife and son. The preview features Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland as Telemachus, and Anne Hathaway as Penelope.
IMAX, practical effects, and a production without unnecessary CGI 🎬
Nolan once again bets on his signature style: shooting with IMAX cameras and minimizing the use of digital effects. To recreate the ancient world, the team built full-scale sets in several Mediterranean locations. The scenes of Odysseus's journey include stormy seas filmed in real water tanks, mythological creatures created with animatronics, and controlled use of computer-generated imagery only for final touches. The cinematography, by Hoyte van Hoytema, promises a grainy, high-contrast visual texture.

It took Odysseus twenty years to return home, something any modern parent would understand if the trip included layovers at low-cost airports. Meanwhile, Penelope weaves and unweaves her shroud with the patience of someone waiting for a software update. The worst part isn't the Cyclopes or the Sirens, but arriving and having your son Telemachus, played by Tom Holland, say to you: Father, you've been gone all this time, but at least you didn't miss the premiere of Oppenheimer.
