The United States Army has confirmed the death of First Lieutenant Kendrick Lamont Key Jr., 27, one of two soldiers who went missing on May 2 in Morocco. His body was located by a Moroccan search team one kilometer from the disappearance zone, in the Cap Draa training area, during the joint international exercises African Lion 2026.
Location technology and safety protocols in military exercises 🛰️
The incident highlights the limitations of GPS tracking systems and personal beacons in complex terrains like the Cap Draa desert. Rescue teams used thermal vision drones and canine units, but the final location was possible thanks to a manual ground sweep. The area, with dunes and crevices, hinders the signal of emergency devices. Safety protocols will be reviewed to reduce response time in hostile environments.
A GPS is useless if you get swallowed by a dune 🏜️
It turns out that neither the most modern drones nor the latest generation beacons can compete with a dune's ability to hide a soldier. Meanwhile, military commanders are probably already preparing the report: We recommend not getting lost in the desert. And the recruits, for their part, are starting to ask if the next exercise will be on a beach with a beach bar. Ironies of fate: the desert always wins.
