The Government of the Balearic Islands will allocate 1,742,101.97 euros to the new Sports Interpretation Center, which will be located in Montuïri. Minister Jaume Bauzà signed an agreement with the City Council to rehabilitate the building of the Ecomuseu del Molinar. The space is being moved from the Velòdrom Illes Balears to the Pla de Mallorca, almost quadrupling its exhibition area to 600 square meters.
Insularity Factor to digitize 600 meters of sports history 🏛️
The works are financed with funds from the Insularity Factor and will expand the area from 220 to nearly 600 square meters. The project will include the structural rehabilitation of the building and the installation of interactive exhibition systems. The center is expected to house touch panels, projections, and climate-controlled showcases to preserve historical material. The execution aims to modernize Balearic sports museology with current technical standards.
From pedal to showcase: Balearic sports moves to the countryside 🚴
Finally, Balearic sports will have a permanent home, even if it is 30 kilometers from Palma. Local athletes can cycle to see their trophies, as long as they don't get lost among almond groves. The good thing is that, being in the Pla, visitors can take a sports route: first see the medals and then run after the bus that only passes every two hours. That said, the new center doubles the space, so at least the medals won't have to share a showcase with the Velòdrom's bikes.
