The old Delicias Fish Market in Zaragoza will be rehabilitated to restore its neighborhood use. The building, designed by municipal architect Marcelo Carque Anyesa in the 1960s, will retain its horizontal and vertical slatted façade, designed to mitigate the sun. Its reinforced concrete structure, red face brick, and stone and marble pavements will be preserved as hallmarks of the neighborhood.
The rehabilitation respects sixties engineering 🏗️
The intervention prioritizes the conservation of the market's original elements, such as the façade slats that function as a passive solar control system. The reinforced concrete structure and face brick will undergo consolidation and cleaning treatments. The stone and marble pavements will be restored to maintain the aesthetic of the era. Efficient HVAC and LED lighting systems are planned, adapting the space for commercial and social uses without altering its architecture.
Residents hope not to need an appointment to buy fish 🐟
Delicias residents applaud the market's recovery, though some joke they hope they won't need an app or a QR code to buy a hake. Others nostalgically recall when fish was sold without touchscreens or motion sensors. At least, the slatted façade will continue to provide shade, something that not even the best 2024 technology can guarantee in August.
