The manga by Moyoco Anno, set in a 20th-century Parisian brothel, is making the leap to the stage. The musical adaptation will premiere at The Night Egg, a venue within the Culture Club that replicates the comic's club. The show promises a less rigid experience for the audience, with music from Tony winner Duncan Sheik and a book by Leah Nanako Winkler.
A stage that replicates the brothel for an immersive production 🎭
The production bets on total immersion. The Night Egg, designed as an exact replica of the manga's club, eliminates the traditional separation between actors and spectators. Rob Ashford, Tony winner for choreography, directs and choreographs the play. The creative team includes Duncan Sheik (American Psycho) on music and lyrics, and Leah Nanako Winkler (Ramy) on the book. The idea is for the audience to feel part of Colette's nocturnal Paris.
From the panel to the stage: now only the smell of cheap perfume is missing 🥃
We already have the manga, the musical, and even a replica of the club. The only thing missing is selling absinthe at the entrance and hiring an out-of-tune pianist to complete the experience. Luckily, the production promises freedom, but it's not clear if the audience will be able to step out for a smoke during intermission like in 1920s Paris. At least, Colette's drama promises fewer plot twists than her own corset.
