The program La Colmena, from Radio Castilla-La Mancha, has closely followed the restoration of a work by Doménikos Theotokópoulos, El Greco, belonging to the regional heritage. The process has revealed hidden details of the canvas, restoring its original appearance after years of deterioration and accumulated layers of varnish.
Technology at the service of El Greco's brush 🎨
The team of restorers has used techniques such as infrared reflectography and radiography to identify the original paint layers. Oxidized varnishes were removed with selective solvents, and pigment losses were reintegrated with reversible watercolors. The process, documented by La Colmena, included the use of microscopy to analyze the artist's brushstroke, ensuring that each intervention respects the historical integrity of the piece.
El Greco resurrects, but without selfies 🖼️
After months of work, the painting has recovered its original tone, although experts warn that it cannot be asked to pose for Instagram. The restorers confess that the hardest part was not reaching for the thick brush when cracks appeared. In the end, the work looked like new, ready for visitors to admire without asking if it is a Velázquez.
