Bellver Castle will be the setting for a special concert on May 30 at 8:00 PM. To mark the centenary of La Balanguera, more than 150 singers from the Orfeó Balear, Orfeó de Mallorca, and Orfeó Infantil Balear will come together under the direction of Daniel Mulet and Malena Moncadas. Tickets, priced at 15 euros, will go entirely to Mallorca Sense Fam. An evening that unites music, history, and solidarity in a unique setting.
The choral logistics: synchronizing 150 voices in a 14th-century castle 🎵
Coordinating three choral groups in an open space like Bellver presents technical challenges. The acoustics of a circular courtyard require a staggered arrangement of singers to avoid echoes and overlaps. Daniel Mulet and Malena Moncadas have designed a sectional rehearsal system, reinforced with near-field monitors so each choir can hear the others in real time. The score of La Balanguera, with its dynamic changes, has been adapted so that children's voices are not drowned out by the adults. A precision job that leaves no room for error.
What happens when 150 people decide to sing at once in a castle 😂
150 singers gathering in a medieval castle sounds like a joke, but it's not. The problem isn't that they might sing out of tune, but that someone might sneeze at just the wrong moment and trigger a chain reaction of coughs. Luckily, the directors have a contingency plan: if hearing fails, may the loudest shouter win. And if everything goes wrong, there's always the option of asking for applause and pretending it was jazz. Solidarity, at least, is guaranteed.
