Director Reinaldo Marcus Green has confirmed that Jon Bernthal literally set himself on fire during the filming of The Punisher: One Last Kill. Despite warnings from the crew, the actor insisted on using real flames for a key scene where Frank Castle walks through fire. The sequence uses gasoline and an apartment building, showcasing the character's return in a visceral way.
Practical flames and CGI-free effects in the key scene 🔥
Green explained that they opted for practical effects to maintain visual authenticity. The stunt team designed a controlled ignition system using gasoline and safety barriers. Bernthal wore a modified fireproof suit under his clothes, and high-speed cameras were used to capture the movement. The scene required multiple takes, with the actor walking through real flames reaching high temperatures. The director noted that the calculated risk was necessary to sell the intensity of the moment without resorting to CGI.
Fireproof method acting (literally) 🎭
While other actors use doubles or digital effects, Bernthal decided his character deserved to get genuinely singed. The production team went from dissuading him to asking if he also wanted to put out the fire himself. Frank Castle returns to action, and his portrayer returns to the burn unit. At least now he has an excuse not to attend the premiere: the smoke irritates his eyes.
