Intel Core Ultra processors, known as Meteor Lake, integrate a neural processing unit (NPU) called Intel AI Boost. Its function is to offload artificial intelligence tasks from the main processor, focusing on low-power operations such as dynamic wallpaper or noise filtering in video calls, without demanding the CPU or GPU.
NPU Architecture and Its Integration into the Chip 🧠
The Intel AI Boost NPU consists of multiple inference cores designed for matrix and vector operations, using a specific pipeline for neural networks. It is integrated into the compute tile of Meteor Lake, alongside the P-core and E-core. Its direct access to system memory allows processing lightweight AI models without moving data to the GPU, reducing latency and energy consumption in continuous tasks.
The Assistant That Doesn't Know If You're Asleep 😴
Intel AI Boost promises to make your life easier by detecting if you are in front of the computer to dim the screen. But of course, the NPU cannot distinguish between a real yawn and your bored face in a Zoom meeting. So, either you sit as still as a statue, or the computer assumes you went to get coffee. Good thing it uses little battery while confusing your state of wakefulness.
