Instagram has begun testing a voluntary label called AI creator, which allows creators to indicate whether their content was generated or modified with artificial intelligence. The initiative, reported by Engadget, aims to increase transparency on the platform. However, being optional, its real effectiveness is questionable, especially in the cases where it is most needed: disinformation.
How the label works and its technical limitations 🤖
The label will appear both on individual posts and on creators' profiles. Technically, it relies on the user's self-declaration, without automatic content verification. This means anyone can choose not to label AI-generated material, or label content that is not. The absence of an automated detection system or penalties for omission leaves transparency in the hands of good faith, a lax approach to a growing problem.
Coming soon: label for humans who don't use AI yet 😅
Yes, because what was missing was another voluntary label. Now creators will be able to put AI creator on their profile, right next to influencer, entrepreneur, and coffee lover. Next up will be a label for those who promise not to use beauty filters, or one that says Handmade, no algorithms. But since it's optional, surely everyone will use it honestly, just like people always tell the truth on the internet.
