Instagram has announced an update to its algorithm to penalize photo and carousel posts that are not original. Starting April 30, the system will prioritize content that is materially created or edited, while accounts that replicate others' material, such as screenshots or unedited memes, will lose visibility in recommendations for new audiences. The measure expands the protections already applied to Reels since 2024.
How the algorithm will detect duplicate content 🤖
Meta's new system uses computer vision models to identify structural similarities in images and carousels, even if they have been slightly cropped or filtered. The penalty does not affect current followers, but drastically reduces reach in the Explore tab and the recommendations feed. Creators will need to demonstrate substantial editing, such as changes in composition, original text, or new graphic elements, to avoid being labeled as replicators. Repeat offenders could see their monetization capabilities limited.
The meme account drama: the gravy train is over 😱
With this measure, thousands of accounts dedicated to stealing memes from Reddit and Twitter screenshots are panicking. Now they will have to sweat blood to edit that cat with a hat or the motivational phrase of the day. Of course, those who already knew the trick of adding a sepia filter and a red arrow are praying that the algorithm isn't so smart. Creativity, at last, ceases to be optional and becomes an obligation.
