In the expanded universe of Star Wars, Sith usually die in the dark side with no chance of return. Characters like Darth Maul or Darth Vader pay a fatal price for their redemption. However, the short film The Duel, from the anthology series Star Wars: Visions, breaks this cycle by showing a Sith warrior who abandons hatred and survives, something that Kylo Ren, with all his potential, could not achieve.
Canon-free animation allows exploring new narrative rules 🎬
Not being bound by official canon, Star Wars: Visions gives its creators the freedom to redefine the Sith arc. In The Duel, the protagonist uses a lightsaber with a handguard inspired by Japanese katanas and combat techniques from samurai cinema. Visually, the black-and-white animation with touches of color highlights the internal conflict, while the soundtrack combines traditional drums with synthesized choirs, reinforcing the character's transition towards the light.
Kylo Ren, the Sith who didn't even get a happy ending in Lego 😅
While the unnamed Sith from The Duel manages to redeem himself and live to tell the tale, Kylo Ren didn't even get a good joke in the Lego Star Wars specials. With the entire budget of a trilogy, Vader's grandson ended up dead and forgotten, surpassed by a 15-minute short that isn't even canon. In the end, the best Sith redeemer turned out to be a nameless character who doesn't even appear in the video games.
