The SES La Llosa de Ranes has managed to stand out in mental calculation olympiads, boosting its students' mathematical skills. The project began in 2015 after a visit from seven-time world champion Alberto Coto García. The mathematics department, led by Rebeca Castro, collaborated with his platform to participate in virtual olympiads, improving academic results.
Virtual platform for mental calculation development 🧠
The key to the project was integrating a digital mental training platform, based on spaced repetition algorithms and timed exercises. Students complete daily five-minute sessions, solving arithmetic operations with numbers up to three digits. The system tracks progress in speed and accuracy, allowing teachers to adjust difficulty. This methodology has improved performance on standardized tests, demonstrating that mental calculation is not just innate talent, but constant practice.
Multiplying efforts, not just numbers 😄
Those who thought mathematics was a thing for geniuses with a calculator in hand are wrong. In La Llosa de Ranes, students have discovered that adding 2+2 no longer requires raising a hand to ask for an app. Now they solve operations faster than their parents find the car keys. Of course, teachers warn: the only risk is that students start calculating the change at the supermarket before the cashier does.
