The Ministry of Culture, led by Ernest Urtasun, has authorized an increase of seven million euros in film subsidies. The total allocation for feature film production in 2026 will reach 62 million, managed by the ICAA. The measure aims to strengthen the industrial fabric of the sector, although many wonder if it will be enough to compete with streaming platforms.
How the economic injection will be applied in production 💰
The ICAA will distribute the funds through calls for direct subsidies and repayable advances. Priority will be given to projects with tight budgets, international co-productions, and shoots in territories with lower activity. A portion will also be allocated to process digitalization and the improvement of technical infrastructure. The idea is for the money to reach specific productions before 2026, avoiding slow bureaucracies that hinder the industry.
Spanish cinema, 62 million away from glory (and paying the rent) 🎬
With 62 million, a producer can finance three blockbusters or thirty auteur films that no one will see. The news has been received with joy by directors, who are already planning to buy more coffee for script meetings. Meanwhile, viewers keep asking if there will be money for popcorn. At least, the minister already has his name in the thank-you credits of the next Goya Awards gala.
