Actor Jonny Coyne will play the villain Commander Coin in the highly anticipated film The Mandalorian and Grogu. His character is an ex-Imperial who runs a fight club, and his name came directly from the actor's surname, at the request of director Jon Favreau. Favreau was looking for a realistic antagonist, far removed from the typical fantastical elements of Star Wars, and Coyne received the script with only one day's notice to prepare.
Lightning-Fast Filming and the Absence of Digital Effects 🎬
The production of The Mandalorian and Grogu bets on a technical approach that prioritizes physical sets and practical effects, following the line of the series. For the character of Coin, Favreau designed a villain without armor or lightsabers, based on the rawness of a real gangster. Coyne had to adapt on the fly to a shoot that demands improvisation and quick response, as the script reached his hands barely 24 hours before filming his key scenes began.
A Villain Who Didn't Even Have Time for Coffee ☕
The curious thing about the case is that Coyne not only had to build a galactic tyrant without an instruction manual, but he also did so under the pressure of a shoot that doesn't forgive a single minute. While other Star Wars actors spend months training with sabers or studying alien accents, he arrived on set, read the script in the car, and delivered a villain's speech like someone ordering a hamburger. If the Empire had worked like that, the Rebel Alliance would have won in half an hour.
