Thirty years after falling into obscurity, Bubsy is back in action. The character who competed with Mario and Sonic in the 90s and failed spectacularly with Bubsy 3D in 1996 now returns under the wing of Atari and the studio Fabraz. Far from being a joke, the project aims to turn this ridiculed cat into a modern, functional 3D platformer.
Fabraz takes on the technical challenge of reviving a forgotten classic 🎮
Independent studio Fabraz, known for solid 3D platformer titles, received the commission from Atari. Initially, the team joked about not wanting to work with Bubsy, but after the formal request, they developed a proposal with modern mechanics. The updated graphics engine allows for fluid movements and levels designed to leverage the character's agility, leaving behind the camera and control issues of the original 1996 title.
The cat that survived its own grave 🐱
Fabraz confessed in interviews that they initially laughed at the idea. After all, resurrecting a character many consider a bad joke sounds like madness. But the studio achieved the unthinkable: turning Bubsy into something playable. Now all that's left is for the public to forget the traumas of the 90s and give this feline a chance, who, at last, seems to have learned to land on its feet.
