The City Council of Bogarra, in Albacete, has launched a project to rehabilitate the traditional washhouses located in several hamlets of the municipality. The initiative, driven with the participation of residents, seeks to recover these spaces as heritage elements and turn them into a tourist and cultural attraction that highlights local history.
Rehabilitation with technical criteria and community participation 🛠️
The intervention has focused on restoring the original structure of the washhouses, respecting traditional building materials such as stone and lime mortar. The water channels have been cleaned, the roofs repaired, and the rubble masonry walls consolidated. The project has had a participatory approach, where residents have contributed historical documentation and oral memory about the use of these spaces, allowing a faithful recreation of their original operation.
From the soap of yesteryear to the Instagram filter 📸
Now, what was once a meeting point for scrubbing clothes with cold water and elbow grease is preparing to welcome tourists eager for selfies and a dose of secondhand nostalgia. Of course, no one has proposed bringing back the hand-washing part as an immersive experience. The residents, wisely, have preferred to leave that chapter in history books and focus on installing benches and explanatory panels. A luxury that was once paid for with calluses and now with guided tours.
