Last Monday, Canal Sur suffered an unexpected blackout in the middle of the first day of a strike called by its staff. The signal was cut two hours before the scheduled debate, leaving the screen black and viewers without programming. This action is part of the labor protests seeking to improve working conditions for the staff of the Andalusian regional channel.
The technical side of a scheduled cut ⚙️
From a technical point of view, a blackout of this type is usually due to a power cut or the intentional disconnection of broadcast servers. In this case, the interruption occurred when the continuity team stopped operating the master control systems. With no backup signal activated, the data flow stopped and the screen went black. The lack of staff in key positions during the strike explains the absence of a quick response to restore the broadcast.
The blackout no one wanted to see (literally) 😅
The curious thing about the matter is that the blackout was so timely it seemed part of the script. Just as the debate was about to start, the screen said enough and went to sleep. The striking workers probably saw the cut as a gesture of involuntary solidarity from the technical teams. Of course, if the channel was looking for an audience, total black is not the most advisable strategy. At least, the silence was absolute, something that is not usually achieved even in the best of times.
