The second season of the ITV police series After the Flood featured the work of Vine FX for its visual effects. Their goal was clear: create digital elements that went unnoticed, supporting the drama without stealing the spotlight from the plot starring Sophie Rundle. In collaboration with Quay Street Productions, their work focused on fires, environments, and set extensions that integrated naturally.
Integration of 2D and 3D elements for cinematic realism 🔥
The teams combined 2D and 3D techniques to achieve realistic sequences. Creating large fires required fire and smoke dynamics simulation, then integrating the elements into the filmed plates. Set extensions and digital environments were worked on to maintain the lighting and atmospheric continuity of the original footage, adding subtle improvements that reinforced the series' tense tone without altering its essence.
The art of working so that no one notices your work 🎬
It's the paradox of the VFX artist: you spend months modeling, texturing, and rendering a colossal fire or a digital village, hoping the viewer thinks what a gray day and changes the channel without suspecting anything. Your greatest success is when your boss asks Did you already deliver this?. If no one comments on your effects, you've done impeccable work.
