The fourth season of The Witcher arrives with a major change: Liam Hemsworth takes on the role of Geralt. This handover came accompanied by intensive post-production work, supervised by Sara Bennett, to elevate the level of visual effects. Nearly 2,500 VFX shots were generated, facing the challenge of integrating into an already filmed project.
Integration and evolution of magical effects 🧙♂️
The biggest technical obstacle was the absence of the VFX team during the initial filming, which required a detailed analysis of the filmed material to add the effects. Magic, especially in combat, shows a more complex design. Portals now include organic elements like dark tentacles. Creatures like the Greylock beast feature infection details on their appendages. To meet deadlines, the work was distributed among several studios.
When VFX tentacles save the witcher change 🐙
With so many renewed portals and black tentacles swarming, it almost gives the impression that the visual effects are the true protagonist this season. While we get used to a new Geralt, at least we can distract ourselves with highly detailed magical flashes. It's a clear strategy: if the eye is busy counting tentacles, it might not notice the face change under the white mane so quickly.
