Sony has informed developers that it plans to gradually phase out the PlayStation Network and PSN names. The change will begin in September 2026, when the service turns nearly two decades old. The measure aims to reflect the evolution and breadth of its current digital ecosystem, which integrates the Store, PlayStation Plus, and streaming services. It will be a visual rebranding, without altering technical functions such as multiplayer or trophies.
Technical guidelines for developers and asset updates 🛠️
Sony will provide technical guidelines to studios to update their games and assets. This involves removing references to PlayStation Network and PSN in user interfaces, menus, logos, and documentation. The process will be gradual, giving developers time to implement the changes. The technical infrastructure and online connection APIs will not be modified, so the end-user experience will not be affected functionally.
Farewell to three letters that defined an era (and many error messages) 👋
After nearly 20 years, we will say goodbye to a name that has witnessed our best gaming sessions and also those moments of lost connection. The PSN acronym will remain in memory, along with the error screen that greeted us so many times. Now it will be time to get used to a new name, with the hope that the essence (and server stability) remains intact. At least the trophies won't be renamed to nameless service achievements.
