Nightdive Studios has announced a remastered version of Thief: The Dark Project, the 1998 classic that redefined stealth. The original game stood out for its use of light and sound to avoid guards, and this re-release will arrive this winter on consoles and PC. Players will be able to relive that challenging experience with updated graphics and all included additional content.
Technical improvements without touching the original essence 🎮
Nightdive has applied its KEX engine to update textures, lighting, and shadows without altering the core gameplay. The stealth systems based on dynamic shadows and ambient sound, which allow distracting guards or hiding in the darkness, are preserved. The version will include support for 4K resolutions and 60 FPS on consoles, as well as all maps and missions from the original expansions. Controls have been adapted to modern gamepads, but the keyboard and mouse option remains for purists.
Finally, you can steal without the AI seeing you... or almost 😅
The enemy AI still has its moments of glory. Sometimes a guard will spot you from three screens away, and other times they won't notice even if you walk right past them. That's the magic of the original code. At least now, when you get caught, you can complain about the bugs with 4K graphics. That said, the adrenaline of hiding in a corner while a guard walks by remains intact.
