Visual effects supervisor Betsy Paterson has detailed the work behind the fifth season of Stranger Things. With more than eight studios involved, the team has focused on refining creatures like the Demogorgon and expanding the details of the Upside Down. The goal is clear: to increase the scale and realism so that every scene feels more tangible and closer to the viewer.
More studios, more details in every creature 🎬
The production has distributed the work among different specialists to tackle everything from the texture of the Demogorgon's skin to the lighting of the inverted environment. Paterson notes that each studio brought its technical approach, allowing for a level of detail that was previously difficult to achieve. Simulation systems have been optimized so that creatures react naturally to light and movement, seeking a more precise integration with the actors on screen.
Eight studios and they still can't fix the Upside Down's wifi 📡
With eight studios getting involved, one would expect them to at least fix the coverage in the Upside Down. But no, the characters will keep running around as if they had a faulty GPS. Sure, the Demogorgons will look so real you'd swear they pay a mortgage in Hawkins. At least the production made sure the monsters have better finishes than my last renovation.
