The government of Singapore has announced a key update for the PayNow system, scheduled for late 2026. The measure aims to eliminate current fragmentation, allowing any mobile banking app to scan and pay using NETS QR codes. This means the end of incompatibility between apps and a smoother payment experience both in physical stores and online services, simplifying daily transactions for citizens.
The technical infrastructure behind QR interoperability 🛠️
The update will involve integrating PayNow protocols with the NETS acquirer network. Merchants will not require new terminals, as static QR codes will be recognized by all participating banking apps. For online payments, the need to download code images will be eliminated; a click on a link or direct scan from the screen will suffice. The system will use a tokenization standard to ensure the security of financial data in each transaction.
Goodbye to the ghost app that always asked for updates 📱
At last, Singapore citizens can retire that payment app they only used once a year and that always demanded a 500-megabyte update right in the supermarket queue. No longer will it be necessary to carry three different phones to pay for a coffee. Now, the only difficult decision will be remembering which banking app has available balance; the rest will be handled by a generic QR code that, for once, does not discriminate between users.
