The Reus City Council has announced the construction of an exact replica of the Capella de l'Assumpta of the Sagrada Familia. The work, 30 meters high and with a budget of 10 million euros, will be located in Gandhi Park. Supervised by the Sagrada Familia Foundation, the project seeks to honor the local genius Antoni Gaudí and offer a new tourist and cultural attraction, including the celebration of masses.
Historical engineering: the challenge of replicating 30 meters of Gaudinian detail 🏗️
The replica will require a 3D scanning and digital modeling process of the original chapel to capture every structural and decorative element. Traditional stonemasonry techniques combined with computer-aided manufacturing will be used for the most complex pieces. The 10 million cost includes the foundation in Gandhi Park and technical supervision by the Foundation, which will ensure fidelity to Gaudí's design. The work is expected to be completed within 24 months.
The 10 million mass: faith or tourism in Gandhi Park? 🙏
The building permit includes religious use, which raises a practical question: will you be able to make a wish upon entering as if it were a fountain, or will you have to wait until the replica is finished for the miracles to be copied as well? What is clear is that if Gaudí were to rise from the dead, he would demand royalties for every brick. Or at least a discount at the park bar.
