Prime Video has canceled the development of a new Stargate series planned for 2025. The project, which promised to revitalize the classic franchise, is now in limbo just as Star Trek television productions come to an end. For subscribers, the streaming science fiction offering is shrinking, leaving fewer alternatives for genre fans.
The technical development we won't see: stargates and digital effects 🚪
The canceled series would have employed real-time rendering technology with Unreal Engine 5, similar to that used in The Mandalorian. Virtual sets would have allowed filming alien worlds without physical sets, reducing production costs. Additionally, artificial intelligence was planned to generate dialogue for non-player characters in crowd scenes. All of this is now archived, along with the scripts and ship designs.
Stargate canceled: the door closes just as we were about to enter 🔒
Stargate fans are already used to stargates leading nowhere. This time, the cancellation comes just as Star Trek shuts down its engines, leaving television science fiction with fewer options than an elevator in a two-story building. At least we can always comfort ourselves by watching reruns from the 90s, which is what platforms seem to prefer.
