A modder known as Specilizer has developed an unofficial multiplayer mode for The Last of Us Part II, scheduled for September 2026. This comes after Naughty Dog canceled its official project in 2023. Fans will be able to play online for free on PC, although the option will not be available on PlayStation 5. The community thus gains an alternative to enjoy the title with friends.
How the mode works on PC without Sony support 🎮
Specilizer has adapted the original game's network systems to allow cooperative and competitive matches on PC. The mod uses dedicated servers managed by the community, avoiding reliance on Naughty Dog's infrastructure. Players must have a legal copy of the game on PC and apply the modified patch. The development includes adjustments to netcode and animation synchronization to reduce latency. No third-party accounts or additional subscriptions are required to access the multiplayer.
Naughty Dog cancels, the modder doesn't get the memo 😅
While Naughty Dog decided that The Last of Us multiplayer was not viable, Specilizer thought otherwise and got to work. Now fans can relive the experience of hunting clickers as a team, something the studio considered impossible. Of course, if something goes wrong, they won't be able to call Sony's technical support. But hey, at least they'll have something to do while waiting for the next official announcement that will surely also be canceled.
