Agility Robotics has introduced Digit, a humanoid robot with a peculiarity: its knees bend backward like an ostrich's. Designed for logistics, its main task is unloading trucks and moving boxes in warehouses. It does not seek to replace humans, but to collaborate with them in repetitive and heavy tasks.
Inverse Biomechanics for Heavy Lifting 🤖
Digit measures 1.75 meters and weighs about 65 kilos, with a carrying capacity of up to 18 kilos per arm. Its inverted knee structure allows for an efficient and stable stride when walking, reducing energy consumption compared to a conventional humanoid. Equipped with LIDAR sensors and stereo cameras, it navigates narrow aisles and avoids obstacles without colliding. Its safety software detects nearby humans and brakes in time, making it suitable for shared environments.
The Intern Who Never Asks for a Raise 😅
Digit works 24/7, doesn't complain about the night shift, and never asks for vacation. However, don't expect it to tell you a joke during coffee break, because its facial expressiveness is nonexistent. If it falls, it gets up on its own, but if you give it a poorly placed box, it will drop it with the same delicacy as an elephant in a china shop. The warehouse manager adores it: it's never late and doesn't argue with orders.
